Montague Expressway Pedestrian Overcrossing, Milpitas, Santa Clara County, CA

PARIKH provided geotechnical services for a pedestrian overcrossing (POC) and landing structure over Montague Expressway near the intersection with Piper Drive. The purpose of this project is to improve access from the north side of Montague Expressway to the VTA parking structure adjacent to the Milpitas BART station.

The project site is in a heavily developed urban area. PARIKH reviewed existing boring data from the BART station and parking structure and conducted field investigation via two Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs). This data was used to develop geotechnical analyses and a foundation report.

Recommendations were provided for the POC and landing structure foundations and site grading. The POC is supported on 30-inch Cast-In-Drilled-Hole (CIDH) piles and the landing structure is supported on 24-inch CIDH piles. Drilled piles were preferred over driven piles because they are less disruptive to construct in urban environments. PARIKH developed a seismic design criteria to provide recommendations for pile capacities.
