Project Description
Kato and Mission/Warren Underpasses, Alameda & Santa Clara County, CA
This project relocates the UPRR and BART to San Jose track along the existing UPRR corridor from Fremont to San Jose. The project includes several bridge structures, underpasses, and pump stations; with deep soil cement mix (DSM) walls, tie-back walls and pavement design.
PARIKH provided design services for the underpasses, with new grade separations from BART and UPRR rail tracks. The underpasses depressed city streets by up to about 23 feet. DSM walls were used for excavation shoring and groundwater control and were integrated into the permanent structure as retaining walls. PARIKH provided recommendations for earth pressure and lateral capacity using DSM walls as foundation elements–an innovative design which reduced total costs.
PARIKH provided full construction materials testing services to VTA (with oversight by City of Fremont), including value engineering and alternate design considerations. Materials testing included soil, aggregate, concrete (batch plant) and asphalt.
